Accessing Kinsella Hall

  • When the Library Complex is open, access to Kinsella Hall is via internal routes from either the Eavan Boland or Lecky Library entrances. Readers must make their way to the stairwell (which contains a lift) just off the Orientation Space (the space that connects the Eavan Boland, Lecky, and Ussher Libraries) to head to Kinsella Hall
  • When the Library Complex is closed, access to Kinsella Hall is via the external door on the Ussher Podium (i.e., the area behind the Eavan Boland Library that has the glass pyramid)
  • There is a Computer Room on the first floor of Kinsella Hall managed by IT Services. This space can be accessed internally when the Library Complex is open and via the external door to Kinsella Hall when the Library Complex is closed

Changeover Procedure

  • When all three floors of Kinsella Hall are open on a 24/7 basis, a security changeover procedure is required to prepare the space for overnight study. This is to ensure that only TCD students have use of the space when the Library Complex is closed
  • The process involves the Library Guards clearing the entire Ussher Building (including Kinsella Hall itself) and shelvers gathering up any Library books visible on desks in Kinsella Hall (these books are moved to the Service Desk in the Iveagh Hall for processing)
  • When the Ussher is cleared, the Library guards turn off the reader-accessible lifts (to prevent access to floors outside of Kinsella Hall when the LIbrary Complex is closed) and lock the glass doors to the bookshelves on floors 1-3
  • They then open the external door to allow students back in. In effect, students who were in Kinsella Hall before the changeover, and who wish to continue studying in Kinsella Hall, must exit the Library Complex and go around to the external door on the Ussher Podium to re-enter Kinsella Hall

Accessibility

  • The Kinsella Hall external entrance door is accessible to wheelchair users (and those with mobility issues) via the external lift between the Lecky and Eavan Boland Libraries
  • However, there is a lip on the Kinsella Hall external door that makes access for wheelchair users a challenge (sometimes an insurmountable challenge if the wheelchair is large and the student is not physically strong enough to move the wheelchair over the lip). This issue is being addressed with the Disability Service
  • Once inside, readers must use the stairwells to access floors 2 and 3, as the lifts are off. This means that only floor one is accessible to those with mobility issues

Toilet Facilities

  • Toilets (including an accessible toilet) are available at the north-east corner of the Eavan Boland Library - on a 24-hour basis, except from 08:00-09:30 when they are closed for cleaning
  • A valid TCD ID card is required to access these toilets
  • Alternative toilet facilities are available at the following locations:
    • Arts Building – from 08:00 daily
    • The Buttery – from 07:30 (Monday to Friday)
    • The Ussher Library – from 09:00 (Monday-Friday), and from 09:30 (on Saturdays)
    • The Hamilton Building – 24-hours
